FRS Two-Way Radio Regulations

Family Radio Service (FRS) frequencies are one of the least regulated forms of 2 way radio in the United States. The radios are cheap and easy to find, and can be used up to and over a two-mile range. They can also monitor weather radio, with some even having built in Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers.
Licensing
FRS radios do not need a service fee or license. You do not have to be a U.S. citizen nor is there an age limit. Non-modified Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved radios are automatically approved for use. Look for an identifying label on the device, placed there by the manufacturer, to confirm that the device is certified by the FCC.
Geography
FRS radios are approved by the FCC for use anywhere in the United States. Many foreign countries have similar approval.
FRS/GMRS Dual Service Radios
Some FRS radios are dual FRS/GMRS radios. FRS radios have a maximum power rating of half a watt effective radiated power and have a built-in (integral) antenna, while GMRS radios tend to transmit at a higher power level and can have a detachable antenna. Keep in mind that GMRS radios require a license and have a different set of rules than FRS radios.
Purpose
FRS is a short-range, low power radio, designed for family use in your neighborhood or during group outings.
Business Use
You cannot make a telephone call with an FRS radio. However, you can use FRS for business communications.
