How to Troubleshoot MicroTalk

Founded in Carl Korn’s garage in 1948 as a television repair service, Cobra Electronics expanded to a wide range of products, including mobile navigation devices, CB radios and two-way radios. Your Cobra MicroTalk 2 way radio provides you with a convenient, low-cost way to communicate with your family and friends. Troubleshooting your MicroTalk radio usually takes just a few minutes of your time.
Blinking Battery Low Light
1 Press the “Mode/Power” button and hold it to turn off your MicroTalk radio. Locate the “Mode/Power” button at the top front of your MicroTalk, just above the power icon on the MT 800 model or on the front right side of your PR170C radio.
2 Release the belt clip latch, located on the back of your radio, and then slide the clip up to remove the belt clip.
3 Remove the battery cover by pulling the lock tab up. Locate the battery cover on the back of your MicroTalk radio.
4 Pop in the four NiMH rechargeable batteries matching the polarity — negative “-” or positive “+” as marked inside your radio. Note that your MicroTalk radio model may only require three NiMH batteries.
5 Place one of the two round wall charger connectors into the battery charge jack, which you will find on top of your MicroTalk radio. If you have two radios, you can use the second connector and charge both at the same time.
6 Connect the wall charger into an electrical outlet, then allow the batteries to recharge 12 hours.
7 Insert four regular, nonrechargeable alkaline AA batteries in your MicroTalk if you cannot wait for a recharge of batteries. Depending on your MicroTalk model, you may need to insert three nonrechargeable alkaline AAA batteries.
Poor or No Reception
8 Operate your MicroTalk radio away from tall buildings and dense foliage, such as shrubs, bushes and trees. These will reduce the radio signal.
9 Run your radio away from hilly or mountainous areas. You need flat, open areas to get the maximum range of your MicroTalk, about three miles for the MT 800 model and more for some other MicroTalk models.
10 Turn on the Maximum Range Extender by pressing and holding the “Light/Max Range” button for five seconds. When you hear two beeps, you know you have the Maximum Range Extender on. Turn off the Maximum Range Extender by changing to another channel or by pressing and releasing the “Light/Max Range” button.
