How to Program FDC UHF Radios

An FDC UHF 2 way radio is designed to function like a walkie-talkie, which allows two people to communicate with each other across a large area, such as a construction site or in the woods. Upon receiving your device, you may have some questions about its basic setup. Following a few simple steps will have you programming your device effectively and efficiently in little time. You can install the antenna properly on your radio, turn the radio on and adjust the volume, adjust your “Squelch” threshold and program channels to memory.
1 Install the antenna on top of your radio before programming any settings. Hold the antenna by the base and locate the antenna connector (located on top of your radio to the left). Screw the antenna clockwise onto the antenna jack, until the connection is tight and secure.
2 Turn the radio on using the “Volume” controller knob (located on top of your radio to the right). Turn the “Volume” knob clockwise. You will hear a click. Continue to turn the knob, adjusting the volume to a comfortable listening level. Turn the device off the same way, by turning the “Volume” knob counterclockwise, until you there is a click.
3 Adjust your “Squelch” threshold by first pushing the “F” button (located on the front of your radio just underneath the display). Push the “1 Sql” key (located to the left of the radio underneath the “F” button. The display will show “SQL 5″ (the default setting is “SQL 5″). Press the “Left” or “Right” seek buttons to adjust the “Squelch” up or down through the levels 0 through 9. Turn the “Squelch” completely up to begin with. You will hear no noise. Gradually lower the “Squelch” to the point where you start to hear noise. A high “Squelch” setting will raise the signal threshold so that only the strongest, closest signals are picked up. A low “Squelch” lowers the signal threshold, allowing any signal within range to be picked up by your radio.
4 Program certain channels to memory by first tuning in to the channel you wish to memorize. Push the “F” key. Push the “VFO” key (located to the left of the “F” key). You will see “SAVE” displayed on the LCD. Press the “Left” or “Right” seek buttons to search or enter in the desired memory channel number you wish to save the channel to. Once the memory channel has been designated, push the “PTT” (Push-to-Talk) button (located on the left edge of the radio) to save the channel.
